For the past 15 years, I’ve provided management consulting services primarily within the healthcare sector. During that time, I’ve had the  opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t. Most people would agree that, while healthcare in this country has many positives, it needs to become more patient centric and accessible while simultaneously providing a high level of quality to all our citizens, not just those who can afford it.

There have been endless criticisms of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) more commonly known as “Obamacare”. Is it perfect? No. Has it solved all the problems mentioned above? No. However, like most legislation attempting to address a highly complex topic, it’s a start. Continuing a “do nothing” policy where we hope that these problems will resolve themselves is not an option.

While there is much within the ACA that can be improved upon as well as areas not sufficiently addressed, it gives us a foundation from which we can begin the process of achieving a positive vision for the future of healthcare. Towards that end, I recommend reading the following document published by Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).

It outlines the type of vision I believe will help transform healthcare from a system that provides quality care to only those who can afford it to one that provides high value, individualized healthcare to all its citizens!
